Falcons safeties open to re-signing with team in 2025

January 10, 2025 by Falcons Wire

Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates III is one of the best defensive players in the NFL, but it’s anyone’s guess who will start at the other safety spot in 2025. Justin Simmons and Richie Grant are set to enter free agency when the new league year begins on March 12.

Simmons, a former Pro Bowler, signed with the Falcons in August after being released by the Denver Broncos. The 31-year-old has recorded at least two interceptions in seven consecutive seasons. Grant was selected by the Falcons in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft out of UCF.

Both players are open to returning next season. Simmons said he enjoyed his time in Atlanta.

Safety Justin Simmons was asked in the postgame locker room last night whether he wants to stay with the Falcons in 2025: “Man, I love it in Atlanta. … The locker room is unique. There’s really great leadership. This place is in really good hands.”

“The locker room is unique,” said Simmons. “There’s really great leadership. This place is in really good hands.”

As for Grant, the former second-round pick lost his starting job to Simmons last season but still found a way on the field. Perhaps the Falcons would consider him as the cheaper of the two options.

According to The Athletic’s Josh Kendall, Grant would “love” to return to Atlanta next season. Outside linebacker Matthew Judon declined to speak about his future during exit interviews.

Safety Richie Grant, who enters free agency this offseason, said Monday he would “love” to return to the Falcons. Outside linebacker Matthew Judon declined to speak to the media or address whether he would like to return.

General manager Terry Fontenot spoke with the media on Thursday and said the team would look at everything. However, the future of Kirk Cousins will likely influence what the Falcons do in free agency.

Fontenot said he would be okay with Cousins returning as a high-priced backup next season, but that doesn’t seem realistic.

The team could also look to the draft for its next strong safety. Atlanta currently has just three draft picks but Fontenot indicated the team would consider trading back to acquire more picks.
