On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons landed their quarterback in Kirk Cousins.
This morning, they added a wide receiver for him to throw to, signing former Chicago Bears pass catcher Darnell Mooney, according to reports.
“Mooney gets a 3-year, $39M deal with $26M fully guaranteed in a contract negotiated by David Mulugheta and AJ Stevens of @AthletesFirst,” tweeted NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “A top WR off the board.”
A fifth-round pick in 2020, Mooney’s best season with the Bears came in 2021, when he hauled in 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns.
For his career in Chicago, he recorded 213 receptions for 2,593 yards and 11 touchdowns in 60 games. Now, in Atlanta, he’ll team up with Cousins, wide receiver, Drake London, running backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier and tight end Kyle Pitts to form what could be a dangerous offensive attack.
The Falcons also return all five of their starters on the offensive line, including Pro Bowl guard Chris Lindstrom. That group will work under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.
“I was around the young Kyle Shanahan, and I saw him develop,” first-year Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said about Robinson. “I saw Sean McVay when he was really young, and I saw him develop. Start naming names – Mike McDaniel, Steve Sarkisian … I see him in the same light.”
