NFC Notes: Michael Penix Jr., Dave Canales, Renaldo Hill, Falcons, Panthers

March 1, 2025 by NFL Trade Rumors

Falcons

Falcons HC Raheem Morris declared QB Michael Penix their starting quarterback going forward.

“Michael Penix is our quarterback and Michael Penix will continue to be our quarterback,” said Morris, via the team’s X. “We stood here last year and we talked about looking for that guy, and we believe we’ve found him. And I’ve got so much confidence in Michael Penix leading us into the future and I believe our whole building does and I believe our fan base does and I believe our owner does.”

Panthers

When talking to reporters at the NFL Combine, Panthers HC Dave Canales said their “first and foremost” area to address is their defensive line while the safety position is another position of need.

“Defensive-front play, first and foremost,” Canales said, via PanthersWire. “Certainly safety. We got one safety currently on the roster right now. That’s a big emphasis.”

Canales also wants to identify an “impact player” for their offense.

“And then, offensive weapons,” Canales said. “Who is that impact player? Is it a receiver, tight end or a running back? That can really help us.”

Panthers

The Panthers announced their coaching staff for 2025 with notable additions like DB coach Renaldo Hill and OLB coach AC Carter. HC Dave Canales said it was a collaborative effort to identify their new coaches.

“Yeah, it was collaborative,” Canales said, via PanthersWire. “It was a bunch of Zooms, talking to different coaches, looking for the right mix. In every staff, you wanna try to have enough experience and you wanna have enough juice. And sometimes, you get both. To have that combination was really important to us. And so, we went through that process all together and really put our heads together and made some decisions.”

Canales thinks Hill was a significant addition given he has experience in “different versions” of their scheme.

“He’s been in different versions of our defensive scheme, so he’s got a lot to bring to the table,” Canales said. “And developing players, whether it be at the safety position, nickels, even corners—he’s done a great job there.”
