Falcons head coach Raheem Morris says Kirk Cousins has nothing to worry about as far as his starting position.
Atlanta shocked the NFL world by taking quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick just a month removed from signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract.
GM Terry Fontenot said that the team is fine if Penix sits for “four or five years.” While Morris attempted to make it clear that there’s no QB controversy between the veteran and the rookie.
“We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do,” Morris explained, via ESPN.com. “And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case. So I know I’m going to have to tell you guys once or twice that that is not the case. Like, we are here to go win, and we are here to go win it all. We are here to win as much as we can win.”
Cousins was reportedly blindsided by the Falcons’ pick and was expecting that the team would use that selection to bolster the roster and help the team win now.
That wasn’t the case, however, and it’ll be interesting to see if the coaching staff keeps its word should Atlanta struggle in 2024.
