Per the AJC, Thomas Dimitroff is moving fast with locking up young defenders.
Seemingly only minutes after Grady Jarrett signed a four-year, $68 million deal to remain with the Falcons, it was reported the team was preparing to negotiate with star linebacker Deion Jones. Extensions with Julio Jones and Jarrett have been in process for over a year, so it was fair to think today’s meeting with agent Drew Rosenhaus was the first step in a long process.
Per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it’s the last step in a long process.
Deion Jones’ agent Drew Rosenhaus is reportedly in town and the parties could reach a deal by end of business on Wednesday.
If true, it is huge news for the future of the Falcons. The team has limited cap space and a number of great players entering or nearing contract years, highlighted by Deion Jones. His size and skills were widely panned after he was drafted, only to change the linebacker landscape and push players like Roquan Smith into top-10 draft selections because he could be the next Deion Jones.
Jones should be handsomely paid, but it is unclear if he will approach or exceed the astronomical $85 million deal signed by linebacker C.J. Mosley. His cap hit is guaranteed to increase in 2019.
