Report: “Higher-Ceiling” Trade Target Linked to Chargers

June 3, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Former top-five pick Kyle Pitts has been the subject of trade rumors for a while now, as the Florida product is entering the final year of his rookie contract after a disappointing 2024. Widely seen as a generational prospect, Atlanta selected him one pick before Ja’Marr Chase in the 2021 NFL Draft. This looked like a justifiable decision early, as Pitts began his career with a 68-catch, 1,026-yard rookie season that earned him a Pro Bowl nomination.

Unfortunately, he’s never been able to build on that impressive start. Kyle Pitts has failed to reach 700 yards in any of the previous three seasons and, while he flashes moments of greatness, hasn’t justified his draft capital. Seeing as he probably won’t sign an extension with the Falcons, USA Today’s Jacob Camenker believes the Los Angeles Chargers could trade for a “higher-ceiling player” like Kyle Pitts, as the Chargers lack premier talent at the position and quarterback Justin Herbert historically likes to target the position. Pitts might save his career in Los Angeles, but several other teams could use his services as well.

Kyle Pitts Trade: Top-Five Pick Linked to Chargers – Other Could Intervene

Other Teams

Kansas City Chiefs

Travis Kelce will return for at least one more season, but the future Hall of Famer isn’t getting any younger. The three-time Super Bowl champion lost a step last year, and he probably won’t improve now that he’s another year older. Tight end is a crucial component to Andy Reid’s offense, and a Kyle Pitts trade could give this team their next long-term weapon in the passing attack. Acquiring Pitts now means the team could slowly incorporate him into the offense and allow him to inherit a featured role in 2026.

Denver Broncos

Even Engram is a fine short-term option at tight end, but Sean Payton’s passing attack needs a player who could be a legitimate weapon for years to come. On paper, Kyle Pitts has a similar skillset to peak Jimmy Graham, and the trade target could play a similar role for first-round pick Bo Nix. While nobody should expect THAT level of dominance in 2025, Pitts could become a solid weapon for a team that could use another weapon or two.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts selected Tyler Warren to be their tight end of the future, but someone must step up in the short term. Tight ends historically take a year or two to adjust to the NFL game, as the transition from college to the pros is one of the most challenging in sports. Whether it’s Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones under center, the Colts next quarterback will need more help to move the ball through the air. A Kyle Pitts trade could add a much-needed veteran to the room and give Indianapolis another reliable set of hands.
