The goalkeeper corp – at this point – appears to be all set..
Atlanta United announced on Monday that the club has signed veteran goalkeeper Quentin Westberg to a contract through 2024, bringing the Frenchman back as a Five Stripe for another season.
Westberg first arrived to Atlanta in 2022, coming off successful, extended seasons with Toronto. He made six MLS starts in 2023 for Atlanta while Brad Guzan dealt with a knee injury suffered against NYCFC, complete with a clean sheet against Colorado in May.
With the recent addition of Josh Cohen to the roster and Brad Guzan entering the final season of his contact, Westberg likely rounds out the three potential first team goalkeeper options for Gonzalo Pineda. Atlanta United had noted that negotiations were ongoing with Westberg back when the season-ending roster moves were released – an announcement that also saw the Five Stripes not pick up 2023’s third keeper Clement Diop.
The roster moves and rumors have been flying in at a much faster pace than this time last season. Much of that is to be expected, considering the amount of players Atlanta released in November and how many positions need to be filled and/or upgraded. Keeping Westberg gives some easy stability to that portion of the roster while also potentially allowing him to take on a mentor role for the 2’s and Academy goalkeepers, especially considering the fact he’s working on his coaching licenses.
