Atlanta United return to action tonight against Saint Louis FC in the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup. In what has quickly become the club’s best chance at a trophy this season, Frank de Boer looks set to name a strong lineup for this one.
On Tuesday, the manager revealed that new signing Emerson Hyndman would be handed his debut for the club and get the start. With Josef Martinez back and seemingly in great form, you can bank on him getting his first taste of USOC action this season. The rest of the XI is anyone’s guess. It’s important to remember that Atlanta is only permitted the use of five international players in its matchday squad.
Saint Louis FC is one of the the final two lower division sides remaining in the competition, but that certainly doesn’t mean they should be taken lightly. As Atlanta found out in 2017, just because a team doesn’t play in MLS, doesn’t mean they can’t knock you out. This team beat Chicago Fire (yes the same Chicago Fire that just wrecked the Fives Stripes 5-1) in the fourth round and FC Cincinnati last round.
Last week was as rough as they come for Atlanta, losing 5-1 on the road then collapsing late against a conference foe at home. A new week is here and perhaps the aroma of a trophy in the air can motivate.
